7 ideas of the best digital products to sell online

By 2024, for most people (at least, for most of the ones reading this article), the digitisation of various life spheres and the use of digital products have become commonplace.

We no longer buy music and movies on physical carriers; instead, we pay for streaming services, search for photographs online, and find tutorials on YouTube on how to perform something that is new for us. Some useful content can be found online for free, while others require a subscription or separate purchase.

Although, at first glance, creating digital products to sell online is very difficult, digital commerce is even more widespread than it seems, and digital goods are literally everywhere.

By October 2024, the number of people using the internet has reached 67.5% of the global population (Digital 2024 October Global Statshot Report, Datareportal). Of course, not all of them will be ready to consume digital products, but awareness in this area is also steadily increasing. This means that producers need to be prepared.

Benefits of selling digital projects

Let’s understand what a digital product is and how it differs from other products. According to the Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, a product is "a thing that is grown, produced, or created, usually for sale". The definition of "digital" adds a specific nuance to the product concept. Hence, a digital product is something that is created for sale and exists only in digital form, having no physical form.

Thus, a digital product has certain advantages over a physical product:

  • No need for storage
  • No need to calculate quantities; you can sell most digital products an unlimited number of times
  • Instant (or at least much faster) delivery
  • Both the manufacturer/seller and buyer can be anywhere
  • No need for reproduction, meaning a product created once can become a source of passive income
All these qualities suggest that producing and selling a digital product is, in many ways, more manageable than a physical product. Indeed, it also requires effort and time to produce, as well as resources for promotion, but if at least some of the difficulties can be avoided, it already provides a head start.

Digital product ideas

Now consider the examples of digital products that can be sold online, to choose what suits you better:
  • 🎸

Fully digital content such as e-books or music

Something that can be created once, spending resources on formatting (layout, design, recording, mixing soundtracks, etc.) and passed on to people for personal consumption. Since books and music are what people purchase by choice and for their pleasure, you are not limited in format, as there will surely be someone whose preferences match yours. Please note that, most likely, you will need the involvement of other specialists — editors, graphic and sound designers — to create a quality product.
  • 📸

Illustrations or photographs for offline use

This type of content can be called "blended" because although you create it as digital, the end consumer receives it in physical form. Thus, you can sell any images for printing as posters, clothing items, or souvenirs through specialised services. Joining a service for selling images is usually pretty easy, but if you want to be sure that sales will be successful, you should take care of your own advertising. For example, create an Instagram account with illustrations and a link to your sales channel.
  • 🏞️

Images, designs, and fonts for online use

A significant portion of content is intended for readers to consume right on the internet. People create websites and write news, educational, and marketing articles – all these purposes require design elements that ensure attractiveness and ease the perception of the material. If you are a specialist in graphic design or photography, place your content on specialised platforms, and you can earn income from the illustrations, typography, and layouts you create.
  • 💡

Content that allows sharing subject knowledge and skills: recipes, patterns, tutorials, or guides

These digital products are among the easiest to create and share. Of course, quality design always helps, but the main requirement here is the content itself. You can sell recipes, embroidery schemes, tourist guides with the best places in your region, and any "how to" tutorial — the main thing is that you understand the subject matter and can clearly articulate the information.
  • 🎓

    Educational courses

If the previous point seemed interesting to you, but you'd like something more substantial, this option might be for you. Like guides, courses can be made on almost any topic if you have specific knowledge or skills and can clearly explain and structure the material. At the same time, there are much higher demands on the format of courses, as it's crucial to present the information consistently and engagingly. Courses are one of the most profitable digital products, but they require a skilled approach, the involvement of specialists, and placement on a special platform (for example, White label from Seturon).
  • 📱

Applications or software, that is another widespread and profitable example of digital products

According to Datareportal statistics, as of October 2024, 70.3% of the world's population uses mobile phones, and 85% of these mobile phones are smartphones. Thus, if you can create a smartphone app, this huge consumer market could be yours. Of course, you should bear in mind that supply in this area is relatively high, and to be competitive, you will need to seriously consider selecting a team that can ensure high quality and then promote your product.
  • 🎙️

    Podcasts

If you are good at speaking, this option is for you. Podcasts remain popular among those who found this format a few years ago, and this format continues to spread among new consumers. For instance, only in the USA, the number of yearly podcast listeners in 2023 was just under 70 million; by the end of 2024 it is projected to be 76 million, and by 2028, it is expected that the number of listeners will exceed 100 million people (according to Statista).

Another option is a video blog. Like podcasts, blogs are often free but have monetisation opportunities, such as selling advertising or specials for subscribers. Of course, in this case, it is also vital that your product is of high quality.

Where to start?

If you are convinced that selling digital products is the right move for you, go through a brief checklist to ensure you know what to do.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What do you want to start selling?
  • Will you need additional specialists for creating digital products to sell?
  • Will promoting your products be necessary, and if so, how do you plan to organise it?
  • On which platform do you want to sell digital goods?

Also, keep in mind that it's not necessary to choose just one example of a digital product to start your journey in digital commerce sales. Such things as a book, a course, and a podcast can support and promote each other and your brand, so the more digital products you produce, the easier it will be to market them.
