How to boost employee performance: measure, evaluate, and improve

Employee performance is key to growing revenue and improving company metrics. Employees' daily presentation is vital in shaping a company’s success. It can be the driving force behind achievements or, conversely, the reason for setbacks. Every task and interaction contributes to the bigger picture, making each day an opportunity for greatness — or a potential stumbling block.

When employees take an active role in making their work better, it can lead to great results. Do your employees show the same dedication to their jobs as those in the picture? Let’s explore some ways to encourage them to be more engaged and committed.

What is employee performance?

Employee performance refers to how effectively an individual carries out their job tasks. Are they meeting your deadlines? Do their actions and behaviour help you increase the company’s metrics? Are they qualified enough to align with your standards and requirements?
Employee performance includes:

  • Ability to successfully carry out tasks
  • Ability to learn new things and adapt to work environment
  • Involvement in company activities
  • Motivation to bring value and develop in their role
Many businesses evaluate their employees' performance either once a year or every few months. This helps identify areas where employees can improve and also highlights where they are doing well, encouraging them to keep up the good work.

How to measure employee performance?

There is no one answer to this question. Assessments of employee performance can vary across roles, industries, and businesses. However, one thing is common for all companies: they need to define their goals and link key performance metrics (KPI) to them.

Here are some general KPIs:
  • ❤️

Customer Satisfaction: How happy are customers with the service or product the employee provides? We can find out by using surveys or other ways to gather feedback.
  • 💵

Sales Revenue: How much money is the employee contributing each quarter? This is especially important for sales jobs, where success is often measured by the total revenue generated.
  • 🛠️

Quality of Work: How does the employee’s work compare to others? This includes assessing how accurate their work is, how careful they are with details, and whether they meet quality standards.
  • 🕒

Attendance and Punctuality: How often does the employee show up for work and on time? It’s hard to be a good worker if someone is frequently absent or late.
  • 💪

Efficiency and Productivity: How effectively does the employee complete tasks? This looks at both how well they perform their work and how much they accomplish in a specific period.
  • 🗓️

Time Management: How good is the employee at managing their time? Being able to prioritise tasks and use time wisely is crucial for success — for both the employee and the company.
  • 🤝

Teamwork and Collaboration: How well does the employee work with others? This measures their ability to cooperate, communicate effectively, and contribute to team goals.

How to evaluate employee performance?

Performance reviews play an important role in evaluating and improving employees' work. Every day, employees create various records that show what they do, such as tasks in project management tools, scheduled meetings, internet browsing history, and chat messages.

The software gathers and analyses all of this information and then provides reports to performance managers. These managers use the reports to review employee performance and give feedback to help them grow.

However, there are some common problems with performance reviews.
Performance reviews that use a continuous feedback approach are more likely to focus on the future and support personal growth. Instead of comparing employees to a single standard based on what they’ve done in the past, this method recognises each person as unique and aims to help them reach their full potential.

How can you implement continuous feedback?

The focus is on developing employee performance for the future
Shared/aligned goals
Multi-rater feedback (peers, customers, direct reports, manager)
Process is mainly led by managers or leaders
Using continuous feedback doesn’t mean you should completely get rid of metrics in your performance reviews and reports. Instead, it means using them differently. These measurements can help both employees and managers understand what’s working well and what needs attention. They can serve as a guide for planning and deciding what to focus on moving forward.

How to improve employee performance?

To improve employee performance, you need to encourage behavioural changes. Usually, there are three main areas you need to work with:
  • 1

    Corporate training system

  • 2

    Workplace culture

  • 3

    Personal motivation

Corporate training system

We’ve already discussed how to create effective learning for sales reps and customer service. But let’s cover some nuances.

Connecting a training program with KPIs and actual business objectives is essential when setting it up. This ensures that the training is relevant and effective. Various methods and tools, such as the 6D methodology and the Learning Transfer System Inventory (LTSI), can be helpful in this process. These approaches can guide you in designing a training system that meets your organisation’s needs.

Workplace culture

As you can see, environment, peer and supervisor support, and positive and negative outcomes are vital for transferring knowledge to employees' performance.
When assessing your workplace, consider how well employees connect with the company’s goals, the benefits offered, and the overall work environment, including flexibility and vacation policies. A positive workplace culture helps employees stay motivated and focused, enabling them to perform at their best.
To gauge if your culture works, ask your employees through an anonymous survey. This allows them to share honest feedback about improvements they want.

Personal motivation

To encourage employees to stay motivated, keep these important points in mind:
  • 🎯

Set Achievable Goals. It’s important to create realistic goals. When employees consistently struggle to meet their targets, they can feel discouraged and lose interest in their work. Make sure to provide support so they don’t feel overwhelmed.
  • ❤️

Offer Positive Feedback. Always highlight what employees are doing well. Acknowledging their progress helps them see their strengths and shows them room for improvement and growth.
  • 🔎

Focus on Personal Needs. Pay attention to not only the company’s goals but also the individual needs of employees. Some might be eager to learn new skills, so consider providing free training opportunities. Others may wish to explore relocation options for career advancement — if they achieve certain results, look into how to make those possibilities a reality.
